Our Story - Hope for Mama's

Mamas in need was established in 2017 in response to the alarming number of maternal deaths in rural African villages. Founded by Nina Kalu, the charity seeks to address the pressing challenges faced by mothers during childbirth, especially in areas where access to adequate healthcare is limited. Our mission is to provide vital support and resources to reduce maternal mortality and ensure safer childbirth experiences for women in these underserved communities.

As a secular organisation, Mamas in need is committed to inclusivity. We offer our services to all members of the local communities, regardless of their background, ethnicity, or religious beliefs. Our belief in equal access to care drives us to work across diverse populations, ensuring that no woman is left behind in the pursuit of maternal health.

Our efforts are concentrated in rural areas where healthcare facilities, particularly hospitals and maternity centres, have been overlooked and underfunded by the government. These areas often suffer from a lack of essential medical supplies and trained personnel, leaving expectant mothers vulnerable. Mamas in need works tirelessly to fill these gaps by providing critical support to local health centres.

The origins of Mamas in need are deeply rooted in the real-life struggles of rural health workers. Our journey began after receiving numerous requests from midwives for help and basic equipment to prevent maternal deaths at their centres. Many of these centres are managed by just one or two midwives, with other mothers volunteering to assist in the absence of proper staff. These dedicated health workers operate under extremely challenging conditions, often without even the most basic medical supplies.

At Mamas in need, we collaborate with like-minded organisations and partners who share our vision of improving maternal health. Together, we are working towards a future where no mother or child suffers due to the lack of proper healthcare during childbirth. Our collective efforts aim to empower communities, save lives, and ensure that every woman has the opportunity to give birth safely.

What we do

Tackle the 6 main issues that Mothers in rural villages in Africa face today:Local maternity centres are often ill-equipped in both infrastructure, equipment which affects their skill. In some cases, mothers are transported to various hospitals in search of equipment and this strain can sometimes be fatal for mothers and babies. Mamas In Need works with the local communities and the local government to support this cause of giving life to the future generation of these villages.

Supporting Mamas in Need was the best 2020 decision I made.
